ABSTRACT

The focus of this chapter is the effect of vertical diffusion of policy-making authority on political participation. While the previous chapter dealt with horizontal changes of decision-making diffusion, I here examine the effects of decentralisation as well as (economic) globalisation. It follows the structure of the previous chapter in that it will first discuss the main concepts, and will further develop the hypotheses concerning vertical diffusion that were put forward in chapter 3. Furthermore, these refined hypotheses are tested empirically, and results are discussed.
