ABSTRACT

This third empirical chapter examines the possible effects of the institutionalisation of direct democracy. After the discussion of the results pertaining to the effects of horizontal and vertical diffusion on different forms of participation, the current chapter thus deals with the relationship between diagonal reallocation of authority and participation. Following the structure of the previous two chapters, the first part of this chapter is concerned with the discussion of direct democracy, and the formulation of more specific hypotheses that are rooted in the more general hypotheses put forward in chapter 3. The second part presents and discusses the results of the analyses.
