ABSTRACT

This chapter explores hybrid learning spaces and how games and game-like experiences can be facilitated in everyday spaces towards a more experiential and contextualised learning. Our notions of effective learning spaces are evolving as we come to understand more about educators, learners, how people learn, and technology. Increasingly, those spaces are becoming pervasive, communal and creative. They bring together formal and informal activities in a seamless and playful environment, acknowledging that learning can occur anyplace, at any time, in either physical or virtual spaces or both. As an ongoing exploration, how we bring together space, technology, and pedagogy within a gamified design will continue to evolve. This chapter includes several case studies from the field that are exploring the hybrid learning experience in a playful and gameful sense.
