ABSTRACT

This chapter begins with an analysis of the construct of implementation and how it links research and practice. It presents central dimensions of implementation that may be of interest to both researchers and practitioners. The chapter elaborates and exemplifies the dimensional approach of implementation. Construct dimensions include: adaptations, fidelity, competent adherence, and "flexibility within fidelity", dosage, quality of delivery and participant responsiveness, reach, and program differentiation. The chapter discusses the challenges of large-scale implementation and sustainability exemplified by developments in Norway. The implementation of new practices can be described in terms of implementation strategies or implementation frameworks. Frameworks are more theoretical and usually have a broader view on implementation than do strategies. Implementation strategies are more hands-on and describe practical approaches to the implementation of programs. More generally, frameworks provide guidance for purposeful and effective action in complex human service environments.
