ABSTRACT
The two main Tiv objections to the present-day form of kem marriage are its lack of intimate association with magical practices and values (which obtained under exchange marriage) and its extreme instability. This instability is so striking, even to the most casual observer, that one ought to mention factors which might well have contributed to the instability of marriage whether or not exchange marriage had continued.
