ABSTRACT
Given the fragmentary character of the available materials, however, and the amorphous character of the societies treated, any attempt to group and compare the units must be tentative, and alternative classifications from different points of view would seem to be justifiable and even necessary. A single example, the Irigwe of Plateau Province, will illustrate this point.
