ABSTRACT

The focus for this session is teaching young adults to appropriately enter group conversations with accepting peers. Socially challenged young adults often have difficulty with this higher level social skill, typically making one of two mistakes. Those young adults experiencing peer rejection will often barge into conversations and be off topic, resulting in further rejection. Socially neglected young adults may not attempt to enter at all. Instead, they may be hoping the group will speak to them, which they often do not. In either case, these attempts to make and keep friends are usually unsuccessful.
