ABSTRACT

This chapter argues that involvement plays in facilitating students' sense of belonging in college. Activities such as "working on campus, living on campus, engaging with peers, being a member of clubs, and socializing with faculty members are the types of involvement typically measured under involvement theory". Students who were involved in campus clubs, organizations, and committees tended to have a greater sense of belonging in college than their peers who were not involved in clubs or were involved less frequently. A majority of the participants shared that they did not begin to feel like "part of the campus" until they were involved in a few clubs, organizations, or campus activities such as student government, intramural sports, fraternities/sororities, or connected to others through class activities. Involvement in campus sport-related activities also was positively correlated with sense of belonging in college.
