ABSTRACT

This chapter explains how classroom environment can greatly influence student outcomes and how this environment is carefully curated by the teacher to ensure all students have the best conditions for learning. The classroom environment is consistent across the department and this is based on sound research as opposed to solely on aesthetics and personal preference. The main purpose of a classroom display is to inform students and minimise cognitive load. Whilst teachers have best intentions when they create displays, in too many classrooms, students' work is printed on A4 sheets making it too small to read. Based on the separate works of Hubenthal and O'Brien, Joe Kirby and Carey Jewitt, compiled the seven principles for effective classroom displays. The chapter describes how classroom layouts in computing classrooms need to designed to help teaching, behaviour and learning. It shows how head of computing is consulted on all large orders of hardware to ensure that they are compatible with the school's software.
