ABSTRACT

In this chapter, I use actual transcripts from student focus groups to walk you through a session while commenting on the facilitation. In this chapter, I’ve put together the transcripts from multiple students so that it reads like one entire session; this way, you can see session how a session might go from beginning to end while getting a feel for how different facilitation styles affect group dynamics. To deal with the change in voice and tone from group to group, I note when the facilitator changes from one student to another, and I’ve edited when necessary with attention to length. Specifically, when the conversation was redundant, I have noted that and skipped over details in the interest of time and space. Nonverbal notations were made during transcription; see Chapter 7 for a discussion of the transcription process. Names are pseudonyms to protect participants’ confidentiality. My thoughts and feedback about the facilitation are presented in italics throughout.
