ABSTRACT

I discuss the science thinking behind determining whether hypotheses are correct. I describe the types of experiments, namely observation, testing, and application experiments. Then, I describe the science thinking pattern called hypothetical-deductive reasoning, which is how the scientist thinks about hypothesis testing. I use the research on the teaching and learning of hypothetical-deductive thinking and the explicit-reflective-count framework to inform a practical “Thinking Task” worksheet that you can incorporate into any lesson I also show you how to use the worksheet in your class with several examples, and discuss the types of challenges students have with the worksheet and thinking in this way.
