ABSTRACT

This chapter focuses on what the art museum can learn from organisations like Knowle West Media Centre (KWMC) that support their staff and those they work alongside to generate original insights that make a difference and bring about change. The group of practitioners at KWMC exemplifies the idea; they work together in open-plan offices and studios at one site and a workshop space at the other. Individual practitioner researchers may have a sense of their programmes and projects if they have been directly involved, but it unfeasible to gain a detailed understanding of the experience of others without careful data collection and analysis. A further common characteristic shared by the case study organisations where practitioner research thrives is the presence of leaders who are themselves committed to research. Developing and articulating the values for Tate Learning was vital to create a research culture within the department.
