ABSTRACT
This chapter explores the reactions to Politkovskaya's murder and the outcomes of the trial that concluded precisely at the time when author was completing my fieldwork in Russia. It traces the historical development of Russia's deadliest newspaper – Novaya Gazeta. Novaya Gazeta's journalists themselves elected their editor –Kozheurov – who served as editor-in-chief until June 1994. The first editor-in-chief of Novaya Gazeta was Sergei Kozheurov, who, until November 2017, was Novaya Gazeta's CEO and first deputy editor-in chief. The chapter is organised around two main headings: Founding of the Newspaper and Early Years, including financial pressures and difficulties; and Threats, Risks, and Landmark Cases: international reputation and the six key murders, with a particular focus on Anna Politkovskaya's assassination. Five Novaya Gazeta journalists and one of their lawyers were murdered in the course of their duties: Igor Alexandrovich Domnikov; Yuri Petrovich Shchekochikhin; Anna Stepanovna Politkovskaya; Lawyer Stanislav Yurievich Markelov; Anastasia Eduardovna Baburova; and Natalya Khusainovna Estemirova.
