ABSTRACT

In this chapter, the author presents the findings from her fieldwork in Russia in May 2014, as well as subsequent analysis of developments up until the submission of the manuscript in December 2017. She provides an in-depth account of the daily routine Novaya Gazeta's journalists follow. The role that Novaya Gazeta played in Russian society according to the journalists was on two levels – macro level and micro level. Novaya Gazeta journalists saw their job not simply as a living but as a way of life underpinned by a shared ideology. The author outlines Journalists' views on the role they were and should be playing in relation to the conflict in Ukraine. She explores other issues and challenges that journalists currently face – from verbal and written threats and harassment to physical attacks. Finally, the author discusses journalists' motivations and the role they see themselves as playing in Russian society.
