ABSTRACT

Implementing a CMMS should be based on the characteristics of the equipment base and the operating model of the maintenance department. a CMMS may not be suitable for some equipment and some operational environments. CMMS as a tool cannot help if the goal is not clear. Œerefore, before implementing a CMMS, the maintenance manager should have a clear priority in the business objectives and then select the CMMS objectives that align with the business objectives. Maintenance managers should choose cost-e¢ective CMMS solutions that can achieve the desired objectives rather than using the shotgun approach of implementing a comprehensive system that covers everything. For instance, if the equipment performance is already at an optimal level but customer communication is a problem, the maintenance manager can select a simple CMMS that provides e¢ective customer notiŸcation of equipment status and activities, thus avoiding a costly and time-consuming implementation of an enterprise CMMS package. Common business objectives and their corresponding CMMS system-level objectives are demonstrated in Table 7.1.
