ABSTRACT

The history of Sexual Attitudes Reassessment and Restructuring (SAR) is a stormy and dramatic tale. The Hippie Era of the 1960s was a time when the Free Love Movement, psychedelic influences, and volatile socio-political change were the norm. Early origins of the SAR at the National Sex Forum and the Institute for Advanced Study of Human Sexuality emerged from a multi-agency investigation in the early 1960s that focused on the sexual needs of youth, especially regarding their sexual identity and homosexuality. McIlvenna revealed personal insights into the inception and evolution of SAR. Over time, it became clear that to be effective, SAR required media to add to the lectures that were given from a personal point of view. In the early days of SAR, chairs of medical schools took the program back to their medical educational departments and offered SAR trainings for their students and the public, such as at University of Minnesota and at Rutgers University.
