ABSTRACT

Traditionally, medieval scribes used mathematical principles, such as the Golden Section, to determine margin dimensions. The margin at the top of the page is called the head margin; the one at the bottom of the page is the foot margin; the outside margin is called the thumb margin; and the inside margin is known as the gutter margin. Smaller margins increase the usable area of the page, larger margins decrease the active area but increase the white space and direct the reader to the main area of the page. Guides are non-printing lines that can be placed on pages either by dragging them out of the rulers at the top and left side of the screen, or by using the Create Guides function. These guides can be used to mark placement of additional elements or the starting point of new sections of text.
