ABSTRACT

Display type uses many of the same design principles as text type, but since its primary purpose is to attract attention, additional factors must be considered, especially, its usage and its audience. Also, consider the relationship between the text type and the display type. If a harmonious relationship is desired, select type from the same family as the text type for the heads, but set it larger and in a bolder weight. Kerning is the adjustment of space between two letters to create a visually even texture and color between all characters, and improve readability. The word space is a fixed value dependent on the point size and width of the lowercase. Headlines or display sizes can have less leading than blocks of text. When display type is set flush left, the vertical alignment of the first letters of each line may seem irregular, especially if they are capital letters.
