ABSTRACT

This chapter presents examples of social and environmental outcomes within a peace-focused paradigm applied to natural resources industries at various stages of a project lifecycle. A practical conceptual model provides an analytical method to re-envision cases as described by Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) practitioners. Using the conceptual model and applying to their own situation, the reader can learn to analyse their own operations' activity similarly. The chapter also presents cases from four natural resources industries: mining; oil and gas; timber harvesting; and hydroelectric dams. CSR practitioners and their managers across natural resources projects can apply this peace-building paradigm to their projects analogously. To help devise a long-term solution and achieve peace the CSR practitioners recalled the wisdom in two stories from the Hebrew Bible. However, thinking about cases within a peace paradigm, a new pattern emerges and generates the potential to identify opportunities for synergy, sharing best-practice success stories and the achievement of productive conflict outcomes.
