ABSTRACT

The contemporary mass and social media have shaped and influenced mental, social and environmental ecologies, including the interconnections of political systems, urban infrastructure and nature. Audiences worldwide have also been confronted with the monopolisation of media ownership, homogenisation of media content and surveillance and commercial exploitation of private information. The creative individuals and collectives have their own manifestations, contexts, backgrounds and histories and provide their own specific answers to pressing contemporary issues. Wardhana originates in the worlds of journalism and entertainment, the creators of Newsdotcom come from academia and theatre, and the media and community artists and facilitators make statements that are not only about the media and other social issues, but also respond to and deviate from histories and traditions of art education and activism. The Indonesian video and other new media art and activism provide aesthetic innovation and have social relevance not only because they facilitate various degrees of audience participation and interactivity.
