Television has propelled the American presidency into celebrity culture more deeply than any other factor, fundamentally reshaping the presidency as an institution and putting it squarely in the middle of the informationentertainment world. Today the average American watches thirty-four hours of TV a week, nearly five hours per day.1 During the past half century, television has become nearly ubiquitous.
