ABSTRACT

This chapter contains five case studies, where three primary schools, one secondary school and one further education college share their stories of how they have engaged with building a culture of positive peace. It aims to share the learning from their experiences and to illustrate from real-life examples how this work can be developed in creative and highly beneficial ways. The first case study reports the aims, experiences and reflections of Holte Secondary School in Birmingham. The subsequent case studies report on schools across England that have engaged with different aspects of peace-keeping, peace-making and peace-building work. The motivation to engage in peace education work was based on previous experiences of successful practice in a similar secondary context. Hackney Community College, London, were concerned about the high numbers of learners who were being excluded and also about their disciplinary process that didn't in any way repair relationships with staff, students or other stakeholders.
