ABSTRACT

One of the chief motivations for the Kuczynskis to espouse Marxism and communism was a basic belief in a rational, a scientific outlook, that life and indeed the universe can best be understood and mastered by means of science. Robert Kuczynski's full-hearted engagement in campaigning on social issues and for peace while he was still living in Germany, as well as his pioneering work on demographics, set a high benchmark for his children to follow. Jürgen Kuczynski's enormous academic output and the contribution he has made internationally to statistical and economic research has also been widely recognised. Ursula's main contribution - which propelled her to fame or notoriety, depending on one's perspective - was to make a significant contribution to the Soviet war effort and to the development of its atomic weapons programme. The Kuczynski family was unique in that a whole generation was involved and committed to the communist project.
