ABSTRACT
There are almost as many variations on the word “Chokwe” as there are writers on this area. Practically every combination of the prefixes ßa-, Ka-, U-, 7u-, Va·, or Va· (used often indiscriminately for singular and plural) with the roots choko, cokwa, chiboque, (D chivoque, chiboqwe, chioko, chiokwe, djok, jok,(%) kioko, kioque, quioco,(3) tsioko, tshioko, tshiokwe, tshoko, tsiboko, tschibokwe, tschiwokwe or tschivoque has been used. Reasons for this variation include the adoption by writers of the names used by neighbouring tribes in referring to the Chokwe, and the cor respondence of some of the forms with dialectal differences within Chokwe country itself. Thus Baumann(4) cites:
(a) Badjok, the name used on the Chicapa river, (b) Tsiboko, used in the western part of the Chokwe country, and (c) Tsiwokwe or Tsibokwe in the extreme south.
