ABSTRACT

This chapter explores the heart of the art of cinematography, and shows tried and tested steps for learning technical skills and developing creativity. It starts by looking at the scope of skills and creativity within cinematography, then compares learning within education, on set and independently. It looks at how visual language is acquired and expanded and how to work effectively and creatively within teams. Exercises are given to help you understand story structure and how to use light in storytelling, that can be applied to shoots of any budget. The chapter finishes by detailing how to assess your own work as it progresses.
