ABSTRACT

The chapter starts by looking at how light behaves in different environments and assessing how to work creatively with it. It then looks closely at techniques for softening and diffusing light and using different surfaces to alter its quality, intensity or color. The chapter then gives guidance for shooting at ‘magic hour’, ‘blue hour’, and using ambient light or firelight and when shooting night exteriors or interiors. The chapter looks in depth at how to control ambient and natural light when shooting interviews or interior scenes including the use of negative lighting and negative fill. It concludes with techniques for shooting day-for-night for both interiors and exteriors.
