ABSTRACT

Chapter 3 presents civil–military stories. This chapter explores the everyday co-ordination efforts, relationships, and tensions that characterised interactions between and among civilian and military organisations and individuals. It pays special attention to the dynamics within the Provincial Reconstruction Teams (PRTs) and the integrated UN mission, but also investigates the impact of these arrangements on civilians outside of these structures, such as INGO staff. It provides insight into the boundaries and hierarchies that emerged and were sometimes fashioned against the borders of integrated structures themselves, between and among groups. Confusion, frustration, and violence are abundant in this chapter as a complex web of relationships is unpacked.
