ABSTRACT
Material on the Basuto falls into two chronological divisions: that produced during the hundred years 1835-1935, and publications subsequent to that period. The former tended to be piecemeal in character and to portray a phase of Basuto life that now belongs for the most part to the past. Recent work is of a more systematic nature; it is associated specially with the work of Dr. E. H. Ashton1 and with the awakened interest of the Basutoland Government as reflected in its officially sponsored research projects.
