ABSTRACT

Most choral songs have parts for men and women, with variations for each part determined by the musical intervals of a scale which appears originally to have been of a pentatonic nature. Occasionally a soloist is answered by the chorus, or one section of a chorus responds to another. The form of songs seldom exceeds a single musical sentence, (D and the words are often simple and repetitive, linked with music and a c t i o n . (2) The composer of a new song is praised, but the Swazi have no professional song-makers, nor are the names of past composers remembered.
