ABSTRACT

This chapter examines the forming and unfolding processes of developmentalism and seonjinguk discourse, along with their discursive characteristics, during the Park Chung-Hee era in the context of global discursive change. It analyzes Park's presidential addresses, which are the documents best reflecting dominant values in the period, and Chosun Ilbo articles, which represent a slice of dominant public discourse. The chapter focuses on the formation and transformation of Korea's national identity and worldview within the framework of the developmental discourses. It examines the state of developmentalism and modernization discourse in the Park Chung-Hee era. The chapter investigates the change in the way of looking at Korea's tradition and history, which was incurred by the rise of development discourse. It explains the main characteristics of seonjinguk discourse reflected in Park's presidential addresses. The chapter discusses the change in Korea's national identity, incurred by the rise of seonjinguk discourse. It introduces the characteristics of seonjinguk discourse, reflected in newspaper articles.
