ABSTRACT

This chapter considers children who behave 'differently' and who may therefore need approaches to support their special educational needs and disabilities (SEND). Some children with disabilities will not have special educational needs. Children are described as having special educational needs if they have a learning difficulty or disability which calls for special educational provision to be made for them. The chapter explores what it means to be learning and behaving in a way that is autistic or suggests a significant attention difficulty. Children with autism sometimes develop speech very slowly. Many children with autistic spectrum disorder (ASD) love music and movement. Children with significant attention difficulties often have amazing levels of energy and enthusiasm. Behaviour management is a useful tool for using when planning changes in difficult behaviours. Attention deficit/ hyperactivity disorder (AD/HD) can be viewed as a 'hidden disability' since it is so often seen as wilful problem of self-control rather than as a disability.
