Steepgorgesoccurthroughouttheforestreservewhichgivewayfurther downtobothgentlyandsharplyrisinghillswhichmakeupthecultivatedmountain sloperegionofMountMeru.Theseslopessurroundthemountainandfallmore gentlytomeettheplainsbelowatabout3,000feetabovesealevel.Beforeoverpopulationonthemountainslopesmadeitnecessaryforpeopletoemigrate,the lowerlimitofMeruhabitationwasatabout4,000feetabovesealevel.Nowadays theyrangewidelyevenoverthelowerplains.
