ABSTRACT

The western observer would feel a lack of carvings or other objets d'art which have come out of other parts of Africa. He or she would be quick to notice the body art of the Meru. Traditional clothing is embellished with beadwork for both men and women copying, to a large extent, Arusha and Maasai styles. Small round circles (mbishimbishi) are scarred into the cheeks of young boys and girls. Young women wear their hair shaved above the temples into two backward-pointing arrows (maZoru). And some men and women wear various objects in their ear lobes stretching them to 3 or 4 inches in length.
