TheindigenousformsofChaggahouseswereoftwosorts.Onewasaconical grass-thatchedhousewhichlooksratherlikeapointedhay-stack,theotherwas aflattercurvedrooftype,oftenthatchedwithbananaleaves.Theconical housesrequiredtheeffortofanumberofpersons,andconsiderableskillto construct.Theywerehuge,thecircularbasebeingasmuchas25feetin diameter,andtheheightofthehousebeingwellover20feet.Theyweremade onaframeworkofwattle,withthatchingaboutnineinchesthickattachedonthe outside.Thesehouseswerewindowless,thedoortheonlyopening.Theywere quitedurable,lastingtwentyyearsandmoreifkeptinrepair.
