ABSTRACT

The organization as such suggests an original military structure : the head, mkuu (or mkubwa) wa kyama (or chama) is assisted by a waziri and councillors (ahal mashauri). The dancers themselves are known as wana chama. The spokesman is styled kijumbe (cf. jumbe). Also of dual character is the sword dance (hanzua) in which champions of two opposing parties carry out a mock fight in which they have to ward off each other's blows. In Lamu also ngoma associations, for men or women, perpetuate the old factional juxtaposition and strife of the now obsolete town halves, Zena and Suudi,™ which also once had military functions. This also happened in Mombasa.347*
