ABSTRACT

Military authorities and the French Government were far from passive during the Phoney War. Indeed, morale was closely monitored to make sure that the Army was ready for combat. A specialised propaganda company used radio broadcasts, posters, loudspeakers, and various other means, to demoralise French soldiers. Their Anglophobic campaign asking for immediate peace was countered by French propaganda. French soldiers living on the frontline with the British saw them as good friends with whom they could play football or share drink. Those who saw the British further away from the frontline, in cities for example, were more inclined to feel jealous about their higher salary or their popularity with women. French soldiers were far more likely to dislike the British if they did not serve alongside the British Expeditionary Force (BEF). There is no doubt that French soldiers were determined to fight the Germans to secure peace for future generations.
