ABSTRACT

The hair is always an important element in any makeup and is invaluable as a means of suggesting period, personality, and age. There is so much effort required for collecting research, developing a character analysis, and creating makeup designs that failure to make the hair suit the character can compromise an otherwise effective makeup. There are times when cutting the hair is the simplest method of achieving the correct hairstyle for a character. If actors are being sent to have their hair cut, present the hair stylist with visual references of the desired style. It would be advisable to meet with the hair stylist beforehand, or attend the styling appointment, to answer any questions that may arise. Another design option for creating the hair for a character is the addition of color. There are three methods for accomplishing this: permanent, semi-permanent, and temporary color.
