ABSTRACT

Cities in the knowledge society have to incorporate learning as an urban strategy to promote global urban competitiveness. As the knowledge infrastructures of learning cities, universities are playing a fundamental role and are taking diversified and flexible organizational forms. The borderless nature in the organization of knowledge, coupled with the growing demand for international sharing of education and training, are absorbing universities out of urban boundaries and into the global networks. A new global geography of universities is emerging along with the strategic localization of global universities in global cities. Rather than being passive followers of urban strategies, global universities have often inventively transformed the urban development trajectory of global cities.
