ABSTRACT

The purpose of this chapter is to provide an overview and orientation to the interconnections of measurement and evaluation practices in delivering quality activity-based programs in school and nonschool settings. Definitions of test, measurement, and evaluation and their interdependent nature are presented and are crucial for you to understand. The multifaceted uses of measurement and evaluation in activity-based settings are examined. Parallels between their uses in school versus nonschool programs are discussed. Current trends that directly influence the importance of sound measurement and evaluation practices are also presented. No matter which activity-based profession you are interested in, it is hoped that the crucial role of measurement and evaluation in the physical education and exercise science professions will become increasingly clear as you progress through this textbook.
