ABSTRACT

Many of the various groups of people which today are known by the common name “ Azande ” formerly belonged to different ethnic and linguistic families. The spread of the Zande language and organization has been remarkably rapid and thorough, but towards the periphery of Zande power there are many groups which have been only partially “ Zandeized ” and others which have kept their own culture and language. The Mangbetu to the south dominated the surrounding groups in a similar way.
