ABSTRACT

This introduction presents an overview of the key concepts covered in the subsequent chapters of this book. This book helps practitioners to develop strategies that can be used selectively to enable each and every learner to make progress. It contributes to whole-school continuing professional development (CPD) on meeting special educational needs, and in facilitating subject-specific staff development within departments. The information, ideas and guidance in the book will enable teachers of Music (and their teaching assistants) to plan and deliver lessons that will meet the individual needs of learners who experience difficulties. It will be especially valuable to subject teachers because the ideas and guidance are provided within a subject context, ensuring relevance and practicability. Teachers who cater well for pupils with special educational needs and disabilities (SEND) are likely to cater well for all pupils – demonstrating outstanding practice in their everyday teaching.
