ABSTRACT

This chapter considers the physical layout and attributes of the music room, from space to storage, furniture and display. Ideally, the music department should be a suite of soundproof carpeted rooms, one of which can be used as a recording studio. At least some of the desks and tables should be adjustable and arranged in a way which allows for wheelchair users and blind students to move easily around the room. There should be enough rooms/space to leave drum kits, steel pans and keyboards set up and in place. It is useful to have coat racks in the main teaching room: most pupils like to keep their coats in sight and this allows them to be stored tidily. Music departments benefit considerably from having a technician, whether for a few hours a week or full time. Without wishing to become political, we cannot emphasise enough how vital music is for the educational and personal development of every one of us.
