ABSTRACT

Antisemitism in the past decade is divided into several characteristics: first, the most common antisemitic expressions are embodied by long and detailed op-eds that are usually accompanied by provocative photos. Second, awareness of antisemitism in Turkey is growing stronger. Antisemitism and anti-Zionism in Turkey are often used as a political gage for different parties and ideologies. The answer to the question of whether there is growing antisemitism in Turkey or even whether antisemitism actually still exists completely depends on which group one asks. Antisemitism was on the rise in the 1990s, when Turkish society began undergoing more liberal processes. Polls showed that very clearly, and the legitimacy that anti-Israel sentiment receives in Turkey as well as the support antisemitic journalists and columnists receive from the current government makes it difficult to point to a different reason for the rise of antisemitism.
