ABSTRACT

The four types of goals important in shaping an internship experience are knowledge acquisition, performance assessment, personal growth, and professional development. After defining goals, one must set specific and measurable learning objectives to help achieve those goals and allow assessment of progress. While it is important to define goals early in an internship experience, you should remain flexible. That is, the student should be prepared to modify goals as he or she becomes more familiar with the workings of the agency. New goals may be added during the experience. The process of setting goals and assessing progress will help the student develop professionally once employed in a criminal justice agency.
