ABSTRACT

Agile experiments used for providing ex-post cost information may work even in the healthcare sector for providing facts and, in that way, help reduce organizational resistance during a wider implementation. This is a very contradictory approach compared to large-scale implementation projects often linked to new technologies, especially in the healthcare sector. The customer base consists of home care service providers and the service helps these organizations reduce the number of home care visits to the patients, hence reducing the resource consumption of these home care organizations. The case highlights the role of a multi-professional team consisting of nurses, supervisors, healthcare management, doctors, technology and service providers, and outside facilitators in finding a solution to the identified bottleneck and creating the setup for the agile experiment. City of Joensuu had started an European Union-funded project for piloting new technologies facilitating elderly people to stay home longer, and one of the technologies to be piloted was Evondos medicine dispensing service.
