ABSTRACT

One-touch exchange of dies (OTED) stands for one-touch exchange of dies. There are six generally accepted types of setup improvement: Single minute exchange of die (SMED), OTED, No-touch exchange of dies, Zero setup, One-shot exchange of dies and Eliminate the changeover completely. SMED stands for single-minute exchange of dies. While Dr. Shingo did not originate the setup reduction concept and Toyota was doing SMED before Dr. Shingo worked with them, Dr. Shingo was able to crystallize and structure the SMED process, which took him 19 years; from 1950 to 1969. So SMED, or less than ten minute setups, really only applies to the mounting and removing steps involved in the setup, which is only internal time. Keep in mind, the overall setup time includes the external steps.
