ABSTRACT

Visual displays can show what a bad part versus a good part looks like. Visual controls are different than visual displays because they go a step further to suggest some action be taken or they help remind to do something but usually can't force certain actions to be taken. Visual management is a system where a device or devices are installed to detect or prevent defects or injury from occurring. The goal of a good visual management system is to make abnormal conditions immediately visible using the tools referenced previously, visual displays, and visual controls, and taking the premise one step further by incorporating root cause, countermeasures, andon, risk mitigation, total productive maintenance, and mistake proofing. A good visual management system allows problems no place to hide and prevents defects from occurring in the first place. Measurements of the process in the area are visual controls updated by team members and are used to drive improvements.
