ABSTRACT

Lean has strategies for control plans, but in a truly Lean environment, they should disappear as any abnormalities should be clearly and immediately visible in the workplace and fixed in real time. Lean and Six Sigma have been fighting each other as improvement implementation models in the United States since the late 1980s. Process Capability, as its names suggests, is all about determining if people process is capable of meeting their customer expectations. Many companies have since struggled with Six Sigma implementation. Both Lean and Six Sigma work toward quality improvement, through decreasing process variation, error, and defect reduction. A good problem statement should be an objective statement of the problem with any relevant data. Management at the factory would warn the employees to pay more attention to their work, but despite everyone’s best intentions, the missing spring problem would eventually reappear. The idea of mistake proofing started with Toyoda in the spinning loom factory.
