ABSTRACT

Lean management is the culmination of years of continuous improvement in the field of industrial engineering and management. The creation of Lean has been an incredible example of continuous improvement on a global scale and requires the balance of both a rational scientific approach and a people-based humanistic approach to reach a sustainable system that provides companies a strong competitive advantage. Many of the key aspects of Lean management theory are based on the positive contributions of the understandings. Total quality management (TQM) has many of the sound principles included in Lean. TQM also suffered from many of the same problems that exist in trying to implement Lean. Many credit Deming’s seminal book Out of the Crisis and the several points as the kickoff of the TQM movement. TQM movement started in the 1920s when statistical methods were first introduced and applied to product quality control.
