ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses strategic planning and deploying the plans throughout the organization. It deals with the history of Hoshin Kanri and discusses the tactical side of Hoshin planning. Many companies have pieces of Hoshin but few have the entire system or even recognize it as a system. Hoshin kanri is the strategic planning and execution process designed to ensure that the vision, mission, annual objectives, goals, and resulting action items are aligned and communicated throughout the organization. Hoshin kanri is arguably the world’s foremost strategic planning system and one of greatest strengths. Put in other terms, hoshin kanri is a structured planning and implementation approach to manage change in an organization to provide desired results necessary for the organization’s success. Pete Babich states in his Hoshin Handbook: “Management saw the company’s planning process as the vehicle for them to fulfill their responsibility for quality management.”
